In Odesa, there is an ongoing debate regarding the placement of a monument to Lesya Ukrainka. Currently, city council members are considering the possibility of establishing the monument in the Cosmonauts Square, which will be named in honor of the renowned poetess.

It is worth noting that the decision to erect a monument was approved by the cultural, tourism, and international relations commission last spring. Potential locations included Cosmonauts Park, Heroes Avenue (formerly Alexandrovsky), and Shevchenko Park.

Members of the historical and toponymic commission reported to the city council that the site for the monument in Shevchenko Park is not suitable, primarily due to the proximity of an underground restroom and the ongoing construction of a café in that area.

“The site in Shevchenko Park is not ideal. There were suggestions to place it near the Lanzheron Arch. There are both positive and negative aspects. A restroom was nearby, which has been purchased, and a café is planned for that spot. With a café nearby, how comfortable will it be next to the monument?” said a member of the commission.

As of now, the representatives are planning to install the monument in the Cosmonauts Square close to the future Orthodox church of the PЦУ, which will be built on the site of an existing structure.
