The Cabinet of Ministers has approved new regulations for the registration of genetically modified organisms, which will enhance consumer safety.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.
The new registry is set to become the primary state information system that will allow accounting, monitoring, and storage of data on all registered GMOs in Ukraine.
The ministry explained that implementing such a registry is a crucial step towards ensuring transparency in the biotechnology sector, improving consumer safety, and meeting Ukraine's obligations under the EU Association Agreement.
Moreover, the regulation harmonizes Ukrainian legislation with EU acts regarding GMO handling, specifically Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment and Commission Decision 2004/204/EC on the functioning of registers for recording GMO information.
This will facilitate the establishment of a regulated accounting and control system for GMOs, similar to the European model, which can mitigate negative impacts and risks to human health and the environment.
The regulation will come into effect in September 2026, concurrently with a new specialized law governing genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
