Roman legionnaires have been spotted in the streets of Odessa, where they will stay for two days. You can witness their helmets, armor, weapons, and authentic costumes starting tomorrow. This is a unique chance to feel the spirit of antiquity and learn more about the lives of Roman soldiers.

Journalists from Novyny.LIVE visited the scene and observed the ongoing preparations.

The Roman camp outdoors

A genuine Roman camp has taken shape in the heart of Odessa, where coin minting and weapon demonstrations are already underway. A real Roman camp has set up on Deribasivska Street, which will remain open for two days. Preparations are in full swing: tents are being set up, armor is being arranged, and costumes are being fitted. Tomorrow, the camp will be fully operational for visitors.

"We had planned to open our Roman camp, but the weather posed some challenges. Tomorrow, everything will be running at full capacity. We know that Romans were indeed present in this region, so we are recreating their history here," said organizer Anatoliy Provchenko.

Authentic costumes

The preparations for the reenactment are meticulously planned, from location choices to the creation of costumes that reflect ancient traditions. However, according to participant Alexander, not everything can be perfectly recreated. Some elements come with "passports" that confirm their authenticity — including dating and archaeological sources.

"I am wearing — a lorica segmentata, the armor of a Roman soldier. This is a Gladius sword — short, effective, designed for thrusting attacks. The shield is a scutum. This is how the Roman army appeared during the time of Jesus Christ," said Alexander.

On Saturday and most of Sunday, everyone interested will have the chance to feel like a part of the Roman camp. Visitors will be guided through the armaments and weapons, and even given the opportunity to experience life as a legionnaire.

The grand reenactment

The grand finale will be a large-scale Easter reenactment, conducted for over 12 years. This year, it takes on a special resonance — as an invitation to delve deeper into events from two millennia ago. In the very heart of modern Odessa, the world of antiquity will come alive, where every movement, costume, or replica — is not just a decoration, but an attempt to feel the flow of history at your fingertips.

"Here, a major Easter reenactment will take place. Imagine, all of Deribasivska will be filled with scenes. There will be six large stages hosting various performances. And everything will begin with the grand entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on a live donkey," said organizer Anatoliy.

Historical reenactment — is not just a spectacle; it is a true journey through time. It allows locals and guests of Odessa not only to observe but also to touch the past, to feel the rhythm of Roman legion life, immerse themselves in the atmosphere of antiquity, and rethink significant historical moments.
