The American tech company Nvidia is preparing to launch an innovative AI chip specifically for China, which is expected to outperform the currently approved H20 semiconductor in the region.
This news comes from Reuters, citing informed sources.
The new chip, preliminarily named B30A, will feature a single-chip design that is likely to provide lower computational power compared to the more complex dual-chip configuration found in Nvidia's flagship B300 accelerator.
A single-chip design means that all essential components of the integrated circuit are manufactured on a single piece of silicon instead of being split across multiple chips.
This new chip will also include high-speed memory and Nvidia NVLink technology for rapid data transfer between processors. These features are also present in the H20 semiconductor, based on the older Hopper architecture.
While the chip's specifications have yet to be finalized, Nvidia hopes to provide samples to Chinese clients for testing as early as next month.
“Everything we offer has full approval from the relevant authorities and is intended solely for beneficial commercial use,” the company stated.
It’s noted that Nvidia only received permission to resume H20 sales to China in July. The chip was specifically developed for the Chinese market following export restrictions imposed in 2023, but the US suddenly ordered the company to halt sales in April.
