Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, is beginning to integrate artificial intelligence, not to replace volunteers but to streamline technical processes. This information is outlined in a new statement from the Wikimedia Foundation, detailing their strategy regarding AI.
"The volunteer community behind Wikipedia is the most crucial and unique element of its success. For nearly 25 years, Wikipedia editors have researched, deliberated, discussed, reached consensus, and collaboratively written the largest encyclopedia ever created. Their dedication to reliable knowledge is something that AI cannot replicate," the statement reads.
With this approach, Wikipedia plans to utilize artificial intelligence to optimize specific areas where generative AI can be effective. One such area is moderation, which automates "boring tasks to maintain the integrity of knowledge." Additionally, AI will be used to improve information accessibility on the platform, "to leave more time for human discussions, judgments, and consensus-building."
Moreover, artificial intelligence will assist editors in sharing local insights or context by automating the translation and adaptation of general topics. Furthermore, AI will be employed to scale the onboarding of new Wikipedia volunteers through structured mentorship.
