Odessa and Wroclaw are recognized as literary cities by UNESCO. The gnome is a symbol of Wroclaw, which boasts over a thousand sculptures of these whimsical characters, portraying various professions and activities. Gnome figurines can be found throughout the city, representing cafes, workshops, confectioneries, libraries, pharmacies, and more.

On October 25, 2024, the Ukrainian-Polish children's contest "Fairy Tale Heroes of UNESCO Literary Cities: The World of Gnomes" will kick off in Odessa.

Young artists are invited to illustrate their favorite fairy tale gnomes and write stories about this wonderful race of gnomes (as they are called in Polish mythology).

Drawings in A3, A4 format, and stories of up to 5000 characters will be accepted for a month – from October 25 to November 25, 2024 – at the email address: igо189188@gmail.com

All submissions will be showcased on the contest's page.

The jury from Odessa and Wroclaw (Poland) will select the best entries and announce the winners of the contest. The chosen works will be featured in an exhibition, and the stories will be published in a book of gnomes, presented in both Odessa and Wroclaw (Poland).

This children's contest aims to strengthen cultural ties and collaboration between the cultural institutions of Odessa and Wroclaw (Poland).

Organizers of the contest: The Centralized Library System for Children of Odessa (Children's Library No. 45) and the section of Odessa children's writers of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine.
