The founder of the popular language learning platform Duolingo, Luis von Ahn, believes that artificial intelligence is already capable of enhancing the learning experience. In the future, AI will not only be integrated into the educational process but will also become a central part of schooling, with teachers acting primarily as mentors and supporters. This is reported by Fortune.
Duolingo is actively implementing innovations in artificial intelligence. Recently, the company announced that it will no longer rely on humans to create educational materials, opting instead for AI integration in this area. Luis von Ahn notes that the app is used by 116 million people monthly, allowing for 16,000 A/B tests to enhance learning methods.
According to the founder of Duolingo, schools will continue to serve as social hubs for children, but learning will predominantly take place through AI. He states that AI can provide more accurate assessments of student skills and better tailor tasks than a teacher managing a classroom of numerous students.
Interestingly, some educational institutions have already begun to adopt artificial intelligence. In the private school network Alpha School in the USA, students learn for two hours a day using AI. Teachers, referred to as guides here, do not focus on teaching or grading but rather on providing motivation and emotional support. The school has four branches and plans to open eight more. Tuition ranges from $40,000 to $65,000 per year.
Luis von Ahn believes that significant changes in the education system will not happen overnight: "Like the government, education changes slowly."
